Abstract

Every religion emerges in a pluralistic environment and forms itself in response to that plurality. The creative tension created in the context of plurality is often a catalyst for new insights and developments in religion. In this connection, the attitude of followers of religion in addressing this is not uniform. This difference arises because of the different perspectives and understanding that is affected by this reality. Not infrequently these attitudes contradict each other, although each attitude is based on the same sacred source.
Muslims, for example, in addressing this problem of course refer to the Qur'an and the Sunnah as the main source of Islamic teachings. Even though both of them hold on to the main source, still the style of thinking produced is very diverse.
In this paper, the author tries to examine specifically the plurality in the interpretation of al-Azhar written by Indonesian mufassir, Hamka. This writing, only limited exploration around the term Islam and related to it
